Extreme reaction to hair dye

January 10, 2012

A recent case brought to the public eye involving Melanie Kenny is just another example of how the lack of legislation in the hairdressing industry is causing suffering to client’s which is becoming more and more common.

The hairdressing industry in the UK is completely unregulated meaning that anyone can have a license to use chemicals to bleach, colour, perm, and straighten all in the name of hairdressing. Hundreds of cases are appearing each year for people who sustained injury as a result of bad practice.

In the case of Melanie Kenny, she was a return customer at a salon to get her hair dyed. The day after, Melanie’s scalp began itching, her forehead was significantly swollen and her scalp looked red-raw. Melanie was left temporarily blind in one eye and struggled to see out of the other. An out of court settlement was agreed in the figure of £3,500.00 but Melanie can never dye her hair again as Doctors have warned she may lose it.

Good, qualified hairdressers should have professional status which would in turn, enable the public to make an educated decision before undergoing any treatment.

An industry body is already in place, but registration remains voluntary. APIL Association of Personal Injury Lawyers are campaigning in hope that compulsory registration with the Hairdressing Council will lead to better standards of practice, eliminate the unqualified and inexperienced practitioners from the industry, and result in fewer needless injuries. Their objective is to bring hairdressing industry standards and safety back on the Government’s agenda.
If you feel that your hair stylist caused any burns through incorrect use of chemicals or heated appliances during a hair treatment procedure you may be entitled to compensation towards any extra medical or hair care treatments that you required to cure the injuries and repair the damage, and towards the discomfort and embarrassment you may have felt while the burns where still healing and the hair was still damaged.
